Cutting carbon emissions and caring for our planet in 2024

Last year we launched an initiative to offset our company carbon emissions. We worked with Carbon Footprint to complete an in-depth assessment of our business’s carbon emissions and then selected three community projects from across the globe, to invest in and make our operations carbon neutral.

In 2024, we remain committed to reducing carbon emissions and contributing to both global climate efforts and local communities.

Building on our initiative from the previous year, we’ve completed a very comprehensive assessment of our entire operations to understand how much carbon dioxide we’re generating, in order to then select and invest in programmes that will offset our emissions.

By financially supporting projects around the world that help provide solutions towards climate change (i.e. decarbonising electricity grids, reducing deforestation, improving energy efficiency, sequestering carbon etc.), not only are we helping local communities in developing countries, but we are offsetting our emissions and doing our bit for the world’s climate crisis.

Our assessment informed us that we generated 437 tonnes of carbon dioxide across our eight sites in 2023. The community care projects that we have decided to support this year were carefully selected by our management team who picked projects that do more than just offset our carbon emissions, but also reduce carbon globally.

The projects we are supporting this year include:

Clean drinking water in Zambia

Less than 50% of Zambia’s rural population have access to safe water, which has significant health impacts. What’s more, nearly 90% of the rural population rely on wood to boil and purify their water, which contributes to major household air pollution and carbon emissions. The Zambian Western Province Safe Water Project rehabilitates and maintains borehole handpumps across the rural community, to help maintain safe water sources. It also trains local communities on the best washing practices, and builds their capacity to manage and maintain their water sources into the future.

The Mai Ndombe REDD+ Project in the Congo

Western Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is home not only to 50,000 people, but also chimpanzees, bonobos and forest elephants. The area also includes some of the most important wetlands in the world. This project not only serves the local community, but protects the area from deforestation by stopping planned and illegal logging. The project will also introduce agricultural improvement activities and village centered capacity building through Local Development Activities, as well as initiate infrastructure and socio-economic development activities.

Hydro electric power plant in Turkey

The Arca Hydroelectricity Power Plant on the Solakl River delays the addition of conventional fossil fuelled powered energy plants to the Turkish National Electricity grid, saving around 31,405 tonnes of CO2e per year.

We’re working on reducing our company’s CO2 emissions and doing out bit to sustain our environment in the future. We’ve introduced a host of initiatives over recent years including introducing solar panels and electric vehicles and developing a whole brochure of eco friendly products. You can read about these and many more of our initiatives in our Embracing Sustainability blog. Whilst our company has yet to reach net zero, in the mean time we are very happy and humbled to support these impressive projects and neutralise our annual emissions.
